Tension mounts as the doors for the Barkers department store sale are readied and opened.
Barkers is now Whole Food on Kensington High Street.
A slightly uncertain looking policeman helps what appears to be a lost Canadian soldier to find their way around London.
Knowing that many of these photos where taken around Kensington I was trying to work out where this could be. At first I thought the art deco looking building in the background looked a bit like a large hall such as the Olympia Exhibition Centre or perhaps the large Barkers store on High Street Kensington.
Using Google Streetview I looked down from Barkers and saw the building where Marks & Spencer is now found and *think* I found a match.
Uncertain as to the nature of the work but I am assuming it relates to post-war reconstruction. The Wiki page states:
“The house was largely destroyed by German firebombing during the Blitz in 1940; today only the east wing and some ruins of the ground floor still remain.”
It seams reasonable to assume this construction a decade or so later was part of the process to ensure the buildings standing.
